KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Numerous years of coaching and playing experience on the highest levels both collegiately and internationally have provided Tennessee Co-Head Coaches Ralph and Karen Weekly with tremendous insight into how to run a successful softball program. Now the highly-successful duo is providing everyone with the opportunity to learn the methods and strategies behind its teams' offensive prowess with the release of the book "High-Scoring Softball."
Published by Human Kinetics and available through their website HumanKinetics.com for $18.95, the Weeklys provide readers with detailed instruction, advice and coaching tips on mastering offensive fundamentals such as base running, bunting, slap hitting and hitting for power and average. You'll learn how to evaluate your team's talents, tendencies and strengths to create a potent, offensive attack, while a detailed analysis of common game situations provides you with strategies and advice for capitalizing on every opportunity.
Included among its 192 pages are 61 individual and team drills that can be utilized over any level of competition to generate high run totals. In addition to its outlines on bunting, slap-hitting and base running, the book also boasts chapters on vital topics such as team communication, circuit training and "The Mental Game" with photo illustrations to better highlight each aspect of the Weeklys' program for high-scoring success.
"The Weeklys have done an outstanding job of identifying the critical components of the offense game," longtime UCLA Head Coach and 11-time national champion Sue Enquist said.
During their first 11 seasons at the University of Tennessee, Ralph and Karen Weekly have transformed the Lady Vols from a program searching for an identity into a formidable Southeastern Conference and national championship contender. Taking over the reins at UT following a 24-35 campaign in 2001, the Weeklys have long since improved the Orange & White's fortunes. The duo has guided the Lady Vols to 10 consecutive 40+ win seasons (three 60-win campaigns over that span), to four top-three national finishes over the last seven seasons at the annual Women's College World Series (2005, 2006, 2007, 2010) and to a pair of SEC Tournament crowns (2006, 2011) and one SEC regular-season title (2007). The Weeklys can also boast of 11 Louisville Slugger/National Fastpitch Coaches Association (NFCA) All-Americans, that have garnered 21 total All-America nods, and 40 combined All-SEC or SEC All-Freshman selections during their stint in Knoxville.
"I was blessed to see all these drills in real life and learned exactly what it meant to play smarter, not harder," four-time Tennessee All-American and 2008 Olympic Silver Medalist Monica Abbott said. "It's important to bring it every time, whether pitching or hitting, in order to have a high-scoring offense. Playing for the Tennessee Lady Vols helped me see that."
