LOUISVILLE, Ky. --Tennessee's Raven Chavanne, Kat Dotson, Lauren Gibson, Madison Shipman and Ellen Renfroe have been selected to 2013 NFCA Division I All-Southeast Region teams, as announced by the NFCA on Thursday.
For their outstanding efforts on the diamond this season, 263 players from 137 different teams across the nation have been selected to the 2013 NFCA Division I All-Region teams. The awards honor softball student-athletes from the Association's 10 regions with first and second teams selected for each region. The all-region teams were chosen by NFCA member coaches from each respective region, and all the honorees now become eligible for selection to one of three 2013 NFCA Division I All-American teams. In addition, conference pitchers and players of the year not selected to the regional teams were added for All-America consideration.
Chavanne, Dotson, Gibson and Shipman were named to the All-Southeast Region first team. Renfroe was a second-team selection. Tennessee was just one of seven schools to have four first-team all-region picks. The others included Oregon (which had five), Arizona State, Texas, Alabama, Fordham and Hofstra.
The 2013 NFCA Division I All-America teams will be announced at 5 p.m. ET on Wednesday, May 29, via NFCA.org.
Chavanne is a four-time all-region selection and is a first-team pick for the third consecutive year. She is enjoying an outstanding senior campaign and is a Top 10 Finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year and a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. Chavanne was also named to the Capital One Academic All-District 3 first team. She was also a First Team All-SEC, an SEC All-Defensive Team and an SEC All-Tournament selection. Chavanne ranks third in the nation with a .471 batting average and is fourth in the nation with 1.20 runs scored per game. She also is eighth in the country in stolen bases per game with a 0.72 average (39-for-39). She broke UT's career stolen base record earlier this season and currently has 141 swipes. She has 239 career runs, just two shy of tying UT's all-time mark of 241 held by Lindsay Schutzler. Chavanne also has 346 hits, just 16 away from Schutzler's school record. She is also the Lady Vols' leader in career on-base percentage at .516.
Gibson has been named to the All-Southeast Region first team for the third straight year. The Pasadena, Md., native was named the SEC Player of the Year and is a Top 10 Finalist for USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year. She was also a First Team All-SEC, an SEC All-Defensive Team and an SEC All-Tournament selection. Gibson is hitting .429 with career highs of 18 homers, 66 RBIs and 60 runs scored. She also has 12 doubles and 14 stolen bases on the year. Gibson's 18 home runs are a new Tennessee single-season record and at 45 career blasts, she sits just six shy of tying Tonya Callahan's UT record of 51. Gibson is also Tennessee's leader in career slugging percentage at .653.
Dotson is a four-time All-Southeast Region selection and this year marks her third year on the first team (2010, 2012, 2013). She was also a First Team All-SEC and an SEC All-Defensive Team selection. On the season, she is batting .351 with five homers, 40 RBIs, nine doubles, four triples and 44 runs scored. Dotson also has 17 stolen bases on the year. She ranks in Tennessee's all-time top 10 in a slew of categories with a .374 career batting average (tied for seventh), 180 runs (tied for seventh), 255 hits (ninth), 12 triples (tied for second), 160 RBIs (seventh), 360 total bases (tied for ninth), .465 on-base percentage (fourth), 87 stolen bases (fifth) and 33 times hit by a pitch (first).
Shipman is an All-Southeast Region first-team selection for the second straight year. The Valencia, Calif., native is was also a First Team All-SEC and an SEC All-Defensive Team selection. On the season. Shipman is batting a career-high .371 with nine homers, 54 RBIs, 17 doubles, 45 runs and 14 stolen bases. Her defense at shortstop has been stellar as she has a .980 fielding percentage with just three errors committed all year. She has also shined in the classroom and is a Capital One Academic All-District 3 first team pick.
Renfroe is a three-time All-Southeast Region selection as she earned first-team nods in 2011 and 2012. She is also a Capital one Academic All-District 3 first team selection and a Top 25 Finalist for the USA Softball Player of the Year. Renfroe is 16-4 on the season with a 1.93 ERA and 161 strikeouts in 152.0 innings of work. She has limited opposing hitters to a .186 batting average. On Feb. 8, 2013, she tossed the second no-hitter of her career, fanning five over five hitless frames in a 10-0 (5) win over Utah State.
