KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - After falling behind 1-0 in the first inning, the Winthrop (49-17) offense recorded 11 unanswered runs to rout Furman (21-36-1), 11-1 (five inn.), and eliminate the Lady Paladins from their first trip to the NCAA Tournament. With the triumph the Lady Eagles advance on to face North Carolina for the berth opposite No. 1 Tennessee in Sunday's Knoxville Regional championship game at 2 p.m. ET at Tyson Park.
Winthrop designated player Laura Hill was among several offensive stars for the Lady Eagles with a perfect 2-for-2 effort and three RBI. Catcher Jenny Scrymgeour delivered a 2-for-2, two-RBI performance, and second baseman Sarah Magee went 3-for-3 with two RBI as Winthrop banged out 10 hits in the contest.
Lady Eagle pitcher Cari Woolridge (16-5) picked up the triumph for the Garnet & Gold by allowing a single hit and one unearned run with two K's during three innings of work. Furman's Lana Mackey completed her campaign at 9-14 after permitting four earned runs on three hits with four walks issued in just 1.1 frames.
Furman got off to a good start in the top of the first with a lead-off bunt single from Lady Paladin center fielder Amber Kiser. A passed ball advanced the runner up 60 feet to second into scoring position, and Kiser later scored on a fielding error by Winthrop third baseman Mallory Hogan on a potential sacrifice bunt.
The Garnet & Gold answered right back in the bottom of the first as center fielder Tessa Thomas led off the frame with a double down the left field line. A groundout moved the runner to third, and a sacrifice fly off the bat of Winthrop shortstop Stephanie Reid brought home Thomas to tie the score.
The big blow came in the bottom of the second as Winthrop erupted for seven runs on five hits with the assistance of three Furman errors. Lady Eagle right fielder Lisa Kingsmore singled in a run on a shot to left center. Scrymgeour delivered a two-RBI base hit, a throwing miscue allowed another tally to cross and Hill tripled into the right field corner to plate two more tallies for a 7-1 lead. Magee ripped a shot through the left side of the infield to improve the count to 8-1.
RBI-singles from Hill, Hogan and Magee in the bottom of the third brought three more scores home for Winthrop on four hits with a Lady Paladin error to finalize the score at 11-1.
Woolridge retired the final four batters she faced over the fourth and fifth frames to end the contest and eliminate Furman from the 2007 NCAA Knoxville Regional.
