Hammond, Rhodes Tab Academic Honors

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ??? The Tennessee Lady Vol softball program has continued its amazing success in the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American program as two UT players were chosen to either the 2008 first or second-team. Junior outfielder Lillian Hammond (4.0 GPA, criminal justice) reaped her second consecutive selection as a First-Team Academic All-American, while senior pitcher Megan Rhodes (3.86, psychology) was tabbed to the second team.

Over the last four seasons, Tennessee has twice boasted the University Division Academic All-American of the Year (Lindsay Schutzler, 2006, 2007), has totaled six first-team Academic All-Americans (three in 2007) and eight Academic All-District selections.

To be eligible for ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District or All-America honors, a student-athlete must be a varsity starter or key reserve, maintain a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 on a scale of 4.00, have reached sophomore athletic and academic standing at his/her current institution and be nominated by his/her sports information director.

Hammond, a First-Team ESPN the Magazine Academic All-American last season for the Big Orange, tallied a .349 average (59-of-169) over 63 games played with 57 starts during the 2008 campaign. The Chattanooga, Tenn., native scored 46 total runs, swiped 23-of-24 bases, delivered three doubles, blasted her first inside-the-park home run and knocked in 10 tallies this past season. The 5-8 outfielder registered 17 multi-hit games and tallied a career and Lady Vol season high 12-game hitting streak from March 9-March 29. During that span, Hammond hit .457 overall with four thefts, eight runs scored and six RBIs. She blasted her initial career HR in a 4-1 triumph over Lipscomb on March 25th as her slap shot traveled over the head of a shallow-playing LU center fielder and all the way to the wall allowing Hammond the opportunity to race all the way around for the inside-the-park job and her initial multi-RBI game.

As a senior for UT in the circle, Rhodes responded with a 23-11 record, a 2.20 ERA and a team-best 233 strikeouts over 213.1 innings of work. Opposing teams managed just a .177 batting average versus the 5-8 right hander, while the Nashville, Tenn., native tossed 11 complete-games, a pair of shutouts and K???ed 10-or-more in a game on five occasions. Despite taking a tough 6-5 loss on May 3rd, Rhodes fired a career-best 11 innings during a marathon against No. 2 Florida while posting a season-high 14 strikeouts. Among Rhodes??? victories this past campaign were four triumphs over nationally-ranked Georgia (including 5-2 on May 8 at the SEC Tournament) and a win against then-No. 2 Alabama (7-3 on March 9). With a strikeout-per-7-inning ratio of 8.9 for her career, Rhodes finished tied for 41st in the category in NCAA Division I history.

The duo helped guide the 2008 version of the Big Orange softball team to its fifth consecutive 50-win season and fifth straight berth into the field of 64 for the annual NCAA Tournament.

Since the program's inception in 1952, CoSIDA has bestowed Academic All-America honors on more than 14,000 student-athletes in Divisions I, II, III and NAIA covering all NCAA championship sports
