Signees Hosfield, Spigner reap honors

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. ??? A pair of Lady Vol softball signees have received major honors as standout pitcher Cat Hosfield (Murfreesboro, Tenn./Riverdale) was recently chosen as the National High School Coaches Association (NHSCA) High School Senior Athlete of the Year and Jessica Spigner (Santa Clarita, Calif./Valencia) picked up the prestigious Gatorade Player of the Year award for softball in the state of California.

Hosfield, one of 20 athletes tabbed as National High School Athletes of the Year in varying sports, will also be inducted into the NHSCA National High School Hall of Fame in Easton, Pa.?? The 5-9 pitcher picked up the national honor despite missing the majority of her senior campaign with a broken left ankle.?? Prior to the injury, she possessed a 9-1 record, a 0.26 ERA and 124 strikeouts in 2008 with a K-per-seven inn. ratio of 15.9.?? During her junior year in 2007, Hosfield set the national high school record with 659 strikeouts in just 257 innings of work, posted a 44-5 mark with a 0.31 ERA, tossed seven no-hitters, three perfect games, 17 one-hitters and 31 solo shutouts and led her school to its initial state tournament berth.?? She wrapped up her career at Riverdale with 1,403 total K???s.

Spigner???s honor as the Gatorade Player of the Year for California places her among illustrious company.?? Past winners of the trophy include former UCLA All-Americans Amanda Freed, Angelica Selden and Lisa Dodd, former Arizona All-American Alicia Hollowell and current Michigan standout pitcher Jordan Taylor.?? A third baseman forced into pitching duty following the graduation of Valencia???s top hurler from ???07 (Jordan Taylor) and the loss of five starters off the 2007 national championship team, Spigner threw every pitch for her squad over 236 innings this year while recording 12 shutouts, 222 strikeouts, an ERA of 0.62 and a perfect game.?? She also led the state of California in pitching victories (29), complete games and innings thrown despite not having pitched competitively since junior high school.?? Spigner tallied a .480 batting average, a .575 on-base percentage and a .930 slugging percentage in 2008 with seven doubles, a triple and 12 home runs to up her career big fly total to 23.?? That mark equaled the area HR record of current Arizona freshman Victoria Kemp and surpassed the 22 career homers hit by U.S. Olympian Crystl Bustos??? during her playing days at Canyon High School (22).????
