KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- After arguably its finest season in program history, the national finalist Tennessee softball team was ranked No. 2 in both the final USA Today/NFCA Division I softball poll and the final ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Top 25 poll of 2013.
The Lady Vols (52-12) have been in both polls' final rankings every year since 2004 - a full decade of excellence. The No. 2 ranking ties UT's highest final standing - the Lady Vols also finished 2007 ranked second in the nation in both polls. Tennessee has finished a season ranked in the top 5 of both polls five times in program history - 2005, 2006, 2007, 2010 and 2013.
Tennessee is coming off an amazing 2013 season as the Lady Vols finished as the national runner-up. With 52 wins, the team recorded its eighth season with 50 or more victories. The team made its sixth appearance in the Women's College World Series, all of which came in the last nine years (2005, 2006, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013), and its second appearance in the Championship Series (2007, 2013).
The squad featured three NFCA Division I All-America first-team selections in Raven Chavanne, Lauren Gibson and Madison Shipman and three Capital One Academic All-Americans in Chavanne, Shipman and Ellen Renfroe. Chavanne was named the Capital One Academic All-American of the Year and was a Top 3 finalist for the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the Year and a finalist for the Senior CLASS Award. Gibson was a Top 10 finalist for the USA Softball National Collegiate Player of the year and was named the SEC Player of the Year.
