2014 USA Softball Women's National Team Roster

OKLAHOMA CITY - Tennessee softball alums Raven Chavanne and Lauren Gibson have been named to the 2014 USA Softball Women's World Championship team, as announced on Sunday by the Amateur Softball Association (ASA) of America and USA Softball.

Chavanne and Gibson were among 24 softball stars who competed at the selection camp and a series of exhibition games for 17 spots on the Team USA roster. Gibson is in her fourth consecutive summer with the Women's National Team while 2014 marks Chavanne's second-straight summer playing for the Red, White and Blue.

The 17-player roster will represent the USA at the International Softball Federation (ISF) Women's World Championship in August. The team will regroup next month for an exhibition game in Morgantown, W. Va. before traveling to Irvine, Calif., for the General Tire World Cup of Softball July 7-13.

"This group of 24 athletes that tried out is one of the rarest groups I've been around in a long time," USA Softball Head Coach Ken Eriksen said. "Their college coaches, parents and teammates need to understand the greatness that is within each and every one of them. As always, it's a very tough decision to narrow the group to 17 but I'm very excited about the potential this team has."

In the exhibition games that stretched from June 13-19, Chavanne led all players with a .750 batting average (6-for-8) to go with three RBIs, four runs, two walks and two stolen bases. Gibson hit .429 (3-for-7) with one triple, three RBIs and four walks.

Chavanne and Gibson starred on the USA Softball Women's National Team during the summer of 2013, helping Team USA to gold medals in the Pan American Qualifier and the Mayor's Cup, a silver medal in the World Cup of Softball VIII and a bronze medal in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship. Chavanne hit .449, going 31-for-69 with three doubles, 11 RBIs, 21 runs and eight stolen bases. Gibson, who also played on the National Team in 2011 and 2012, hit .415, going 27-for-65 with four homers, five doubles, 16 RBIs and 20 runs.

Ken Eriksen (Tampa, Fla./Head Coach at USF) will lead the National Team and will be assisted by three-time Olympic Gold Medalist Laura Berg (Corvallis, Ore./head coach Oregon State) as well as Howard Dobson (Orange, Texas/assistant coach at LSU) and Lisa Dodd (San Diego, Calif./head coach at UNLV) throughout the summer events.

In preparation for the ISF Women's World Championships, Aug. 15-24, 2014 in Haarlem, Netherlands, the 2014 Women's National Team will compete in exhibition games as well as three tournaments that include the General Tire World Cup of Softball IX in Irvine, Calif., July 7-13, the Canadian Open Fast Pitch International in Surrey, British Columbia, Canada, July 15-21 and Italian Softball Week in Azzano, Italy, Aug. 6-10.
