KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- Tennessee's Lauren Gibson and Raven Chavanne and Team USA return to action this week in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship in Surrey, B.C., Canada, which runs July 16-22.
Team USA is coming off a silver-medal finish in the 2013 General Tire World Cup of Softball VIII, losing to Japan in the title game.
The Stars and Stripes will play open play in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship tonight against the California A's at 11:30 p.m. ET. Team USA gets a World Cup title-game rematch on Wednesday at midnight ET when it takes on Japan. On Thursday, the Americans play Australia at 6:30 p.m. ET and Venezuela at 11:30 p.m. ET. The team's final pool-play game is on Thursday against host-nation Canada at 9:30 p.m. ET.
The six teams will be seeded based on record and compete in playoffs from July 20-22.
The tournament will feature live statistics and live video through the Canadian Open Fastpitch website. There live video for the entire tournament is available for $19.99. Live video for single games is available for $4.99 per game.
Gibson is coming off the most impressive World Cup showing of any Team USA player. She hit .500 (6-for-12) and led the team with six hits, six runs, five RBIs and four stolen bases. Her two home runs tied for the team lead and she also boasted a USA-best 1.683 OPS (1.083 slugging percentage, .600 on-base percentage).
In four World Cup appearances, Chavanne hit .273 for the Red, White and Blue, going 3-for-11 with two runs and two stolen bases. Gibson and Chavanne combined for six of the American's nine stolen bases in the World Cup.
