Chavanne Helps USA Take 2 On Thursday

SURREY, Canada - Tennessee's Raven Chavanne enjoyed a pair of multi-hit games on Thursday to help lead Team USA to a 5-4, eight-inning win over Australia and an 8-1, five-inning victory over Venezuela in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship.

Chavanne started both games at third base and went a combined 4-for-5 with two runs, one RBI, one double, one walk and six defensive assists from the hot corner. Fellow Lady Vol Lauren Gibson played in Team USA's win over Australia and went 1-for-3, extending her Team USA hitting streak this summer to a squad-best seven games.

USA 5, Australia 4 (8 Innings)

Team USA took a 2-0 lead after three innings, but had to rally with three runs in the bottom of the eighth after the Australians scored two in the sixth and two in the top of the eighth.

Chavanne hit second and went 2-for-2 with one walk, one run and five defensive assists from third base in Team USA's 5-4 win.

Sara Nevins earned the win for the Americans after throwing the seventh and the eighth with one strikeout and two runs allowed (one earned). Jessica Moore started and tossed 4.1 scoreless innings before being relieved in the circle. Cheridan Hawkins got the final two outs of the fifth and Valerie Arioto threw the sixth inning, allowing two earned runs.

Kaia Parnaby started and took the loss for Australia after throwing six frames with six strikeouts and two runs (one earned) allowed. Vanessa Stokes threw the seventh and into the eighth, giving up three runs (two earned).

Amanda Chidester gave Team USA a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when she knocked a leadoff homer on a 2-2 pitch.

Chavanne led off the bottom of the third inning with a single off Parnaby. Lauren Gibson followed with a single to give Team USA two runners on with no outs. Arioto had a flyout to left field and Chavanne scored on an error by the left fielder to give the Red, White and Blue a 2-0 lead.

Australia knotted the game a 2-2 in the top of the sixth when Georgia Casey hit a two-RBI double with two outs to score Jodi Bowering and Chelsea Forkin.

The Aussies pulled ahead in the top of the eighth when Bowering hit a one-out RBI single to score Leigh Godfrey. Three batters later, Stacey Porter scored from third base on a wild pitch to push Australia's lead to 4-2.

The Americans enjoyed an incredible rally in the bottom of the eighth. With Kourtney Salvarola on second base as part of the international tie-breaker rule to start the inning, Lauren Chamberlain hit an RBI single to pull Team USA to within 4-3. Nicole Hudson singled and Taylor Thorn reached on an error at third, loading the bases with no outs for Jessica Moore. Moore delivered with a two-RBI single to score Chamberlain and pinch runner Rhea Taylor, lifting the Americans to a 5-4 win.

USA 8, Venezuela 1 (5 innings)

In the late game, Team USA needed just five frames to defeat Venezuela, 8-1, scoring two in the first and pouring on six in the third.

Raven Chavanne started at third and batted leadoff for the Americans, going 2-for-3 with one RBI, one double and one run.

Cheridan Hawkins earned the win after tossing three innings with four strikeouts and one unearned run allowed. Aimee Creger threw a scoreless fourth and fifth.

Maria Gomez took the loss for Venezuela, allowing two runs (one earned) in just one inning of work. Marcel Torres allowed five runs (three earned) over one frame and Anyibel Ramirez allowed one unearned run in two relief innings.

Venezuela jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the top of the first when Jaycey Sojo singled and Maria Soto scored on an error by USA centerfielder Destinee Martinez.

Team USA responded quickly with two runs in the bottom of the first to pull in front, 2-1. Amanda Chidester knocked a one-out, two-RBI double to score Rhea Taylor and Taylor Hoagland.

The Americans' huge, six-run third put the game out of reach. Chidester scored with the bases loaded on a fielder's choice by Lindsey Ziegenhirt. In the next at-bat, Kourtney Salvarola hit a two-RBI single. Two batters later, Chavanne clubbed an RBI double to score Ziegenhirt. Salvarola would score two batters later on an error by the pitcher. Chavanne rounded out Team USA's scoring off an RBI single by Chidester.
