KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --Tennessee softball co-head coach Karen Weekly will join the USA Softball Women's National Team coaching staff next week as an assistant coach. Team USA will next compete in the Mayor's Cup and the Pan American Games Qualifier from Aug. 6-18 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Karen Weekly previously worked with the Team USA staff in 2011 and 2012. Last summer, she helped lead the U.S. Senior National Team to a gold medal in the World Cup of Softball and silver in both the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship and the ISF World Championships. She was also the head coach of the 2012 U.S. Elite Team, which competed in exhibitions against the Senior National Team.
Weekly will be reunited with Tennessee stars Raven Chavanne and Lauren Gibson, who have continued to shine as two of Team USA's top players this summer. In 12 appearances, Chavanne is hitting .405 (15-for-37) with one double, two RBIs, 10 runs and six stolen bases. Gibson has played in 11 games and has provided much of the power hitting for the Stars and Stripes, hitting .400 (14-for-35) with four homers, nine RBIs, three doubles and 11 runs.
Team USA took silver in the World Cup of Softball VIII (July 11-14) and bronze in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship (July 16-22). The Mayor's Cup runs from Aug. 6-9 and the Pan American Games Qualifier runs from Aug. 10-18.
