KNOXVILLE, Tenn. --The Tennessee trio of Karen Weekly, Raven Chavanne and Lauren Gibson will look to help the USA Softball Women's National Team win its first gold medal of the summer as the Red, White and Blue competes in the Mayor's Cup and the ISF Women's World Championship/Pan American Games qualifier from Aug. 6-18 in San Juan, Puerto Rico.
Weekly joins Team USA as an assistant coach this week after serving in the same role last summer. Chavanne and Gibson have shined for the U.S. this summer in the World Cup of Softball VIII (July 11-14) and the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship (July 16-22). The team took silver in the World Cup and bronze in the Canadian Open.
In 12 appearances, Chavanne is hitting .405 (15-for-37) with one double, two RBIs, 10 runs and six stolen bases. Gibson has played in 11 games and has provided much of the power hitting for the Stars and Stripes, hitting .400 (14-for-35) with four homers, nine RBIs, three doubles and 11 runs.
Weekly will work with the hitters. Team USA's offense has been strong this summer, hitting .327 and averaging 5.5 runs over 13 games.
