SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico --The remainder of the Mayor's Cup was cancelled on Friday and the USA Softball Women's National Team was awarded the gold medal by default.
Rain in San Juan adjusted the schedule throughout the week. The U.S. went 4-0 with wins over Canada, Argentina, Puerto Rico and Cuba. The gold medal in the Mayor's Cup marks Team USA's first gold of the summer after taking silver in the World Cup of Softball VIII (July 11-14) and bronze in the Canadian Open Fastpitch International Championship (July 16-22).
Tennessee's Raven Chavanne hit .400 (4-for-10) over three Mayor's Cup appearances with three runs, one RBI, one walk and two stolen bases. UT's Lauren Gibson was 2-for-8 with one double, two RBIs and two runs over three games. For the summer, Chavanne is hitting .404 (19-for-47) with one double, three RBIs, 13 runs and eight stolen bases in 15 appearances. Gibson has played in 14 games and is hitting .372 (16-for-43) with four homers, 11 RBIs, four doubles and 13 runs.
Tennessee co-head coach Karen Weekly joined Team USA as an assistant coach this week. The Red, White and Blue hit .299 as a team and averaged 7.5 runs per game. The Americans' pitching staff combined for a 1.88 team ERA and gave up an average of two runs per game.
Next up for Team USA is the Pan American Games Qualifier, which runs from Aug. 10-18 in Puerto Rico. The U.S. is in Pool 1 with Cuba, Argentina, Colombia, Brazil, Aruba, El Salvador and Peru. Pool 2 is comprised of Canada, Venezuela, the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Guatemala, Mexico, Virgin Islands and Belize. Team USA opens pool play against Peru on Saturday, Aug. 10 at 4:30 p.m. ET.
