UT Duo Helps USA Rally Back vs. Cuba, 5-1

SAN JUAN, Puerto Rico --Trailing, 1-0, through three innings and a rain delay that stretched much of the day, the USA Softball Women's National Team battled back to claim a 5-1 victory over Cuba on Monday in the Pan American Games Qualifier.

Tennessee's Raven Chavanne and Lauren Gibson each contributed to Team USA's comeback. Chavanne was 1-for-2 with one RBI and Gibson was 1-for-4 with one run scored. Valerie Arioto had two hits and two RBIs to help lead the American's surge after the rain delay. The game started at 9 a.m. ET and did not conclude until 7:27 p.m.

Team USA will next face Colombia on Tuesday at 12:30 p.m. ET.

Cheridan Hawkins earned the win after striking out three and allowing one earned run over three innings. Sara Nevins pitched four scoreless relief innings with six strikeouts.

Cuba's Yilliam Torres Bargas took the loss after allowing three earned runs over five innings. Marlen Bubaire Benitez gave up two more earned run in one relief frame.

Cuba took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Yarisleidis Casanova Dominguez hit a two-out, RBI single to plate Yanitza Aviles Feitas from second base.

Team USA's offense stalled through first three innings before rain settled in and forced the teams to depart the field for some time.

Play resumed at 6:10 p.m. ET. Gibson sparked the USA offense in the bottom of the fourth, hitting a leadoff single. Two batters later, Gibson advanced on a passed ball and Arioto drove her in with an RBI double to knot the game at 1-1. Arioto scored in the next at-bat when Lauren Chamberlain drew a walk, giving the U.S. a 2-1 edge.

In the bottom of the fifth, Arioto came up big again, hitting a two-out, RBI single to plate pinch runner Rhea Taylor from second base.

Team USA added two more runs in the bottom of the sixth. With one out and runners on second and third, Michelle Moultrie had an RBI sac hit to plate Taylor Hoagland. Chavanne followed with an RBI single to plate Lindsey Ziegenhirt from third base.
