HAARLEM, Netherlands -- Tennessee softball alums Raven Chavanne and Lauren Gibson each scored and drove in runs to help the USA Softball Women's National Team defeat the Netherlands, 10-0, in four frames on Friday in its first pool-play game of the 2014 ISF XIV World Championship.
The Americans will next face Botswana on Saturday at 6:30 a.m. ET. Team USA is seeking its 10th gold in the World Championships.
Chavanne drew a walk in a scoreless first inning and Gibson scored the first run of the game in the second inning when Amanda Chidester hit a two-run homer to left field. The Americans poured on eight runs in the third inning with Gibson hitting an RBI single to right to push the lead to 4-0 and Chavanne knocking an RBI single to center, plating Haylie McCleney to stretch the lead to 10-0.
The Tennessee duo of Chavanne and Gibson continue to play a big role in Team USA's offensive punch.
Chavanne has been outstanding for the Red, White and Blue this summer. Over 22 official games (excluding seven exhibitions) she is hitting a team-high .485 (32-for-66) with two homers, one double, 17 RBIs, 20 runs and four walks. Chavanne has a .521 on-base percentage and a .591 slugging percentage over those 22 games.
Gibson, who has been a Team USA staple the last several summers, ranks third on the Stars and Stripes with nine extra-base hits. In 22 official games, she is batting .339 with three homers, six doubles, 14 RBIs, 17 runs and six walks. Gibson has a .412 on-base percentage and a .593 slugging percentage.
