UT Adds Shaliyah Geathers To Signing Class (Nov. 20)

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee softball program has made a big splash in the early signing period as Annie Aldrete, Megan Geer and Taylor Koenig have signed National Letters of Intent to join the Lady Vols, starting in the 2013-14 academic year.

"This might be our best recruiting class that does not include a pitcher," Tennessee co-head coach Ralph Weekly said. "All three players have played in the semifinals of the Premier National Championship with their respective teams. They all have strong backgrounds that will enable them to compete for immediate playing time and success at the SEC level. Most importantly, all three do extremely well in school and have high academic goals."

Nov. 14 marked the start of early signing period for prospective softball student-athletes enrolling in the 2013-14 academic year.

Aldrete is a catcher from Monterey, Calif. As a junior in 2012, she garnered MaxPreps Small School All-America honors and Cal-Hi Sports Small School All-State honors after hitting .544 with eight homers, 12 doubles, 48 RBIs and 40 runs scored.

Geer, a second baseman from Los Alamitos, Calif., and Koenig, a third baseman from Mira Loma, Calif., played on the same club team, So Cal Athletics U18 Gold. As team captains, Greer and Koenig have led their team to Premier National Championship titles in 2011 and 2012.

Geer had the game-winning hit for So Cal Athletics U18 Gold to clinch the 2012 championship. Those heroics came on the heels of a banner junior season at Los Alamitos in which she earned a 2012 All-CIF Southern Section and league MVP honors.

As a junior, Koenig was one of the key leaders on Norco's 2012 national championship team. Her Norco team also clinched the No. 1 spot in the final POWERADE FAB 50. Koenig and the Cougars also won the CIF Southern Section Division I title and posted a stellar 32-2 record. Koenig hit two RBI singles to lead her team to a 6-4 win and the state title. She also earned all-tournament and all-league honors.

Tennessee went 52-14 last year and the Lady Vols are coming off of their fifth Women's College World Series appearance in the last eight years. This spring, UT returns 14 players from its 2012 Women's College World series squad, including seven starters and two starting pitchers. UT also returns all four of its 2012 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Americans in Lauren Gibson, Ellen Renfroe, Raven Chavanne and Madison Shipman.
