Softball Nets Program-Best 3.42 Fall GPA

Dec. 21, 2012

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee softball team enjoyed its best academic semester in program history this fall as the Lady Vols combined for a 3.42 team GPA.

Sixteen of the 20 Lady Vols achieved a fall GPA of 3.0 or higher. Erin Gabriel, Whitney Hammond, Anna Renfroe and Ellen Renfroe had perfect 4.0 GPAs.

"Academics are really important on our team and we are really proud of the way our players performed in the classroom this fall. The credit goes first to the players, second to Fernandez West from the Thornton Center, who is our academic advisor, and third to Karen, who is in charge of academics for our team," said co-head coach Ralph Weekly, who monitors the academic process of all of the softball student-athletes.

Last May, Raven Chavanne and Ellen Renfroe were named Capital One Academic All-Americans. Tennessee has had 14 Academic All-Americans over the last eight years. UT has had 17 Academic All-Americans in program history.

Tennessee is coming off a 52-14 season in 2012 and its fifth Women's College World Series appearance in the last eight years. This spring, the Lady Vols return all four of their 2012 Louisville Slugger/NFCA All-Americans in Lauren Gibson, Ellen Renfroe, Raven Chavanne and Madison Shipman. UT opens the 2013 season on Feb. 7 against Southern Utah in the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah.
