KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Senior Samara Gelb and juniors Brooke Watson and Marina Ribi highlighted a number of swims for Tennessee Saturday, as all three registered season-best times in their respective events on the first day of the Bulldog Last Chance Meet held at Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga.
Competing in the 100y fly, Watson touched in at 54.58 seconds in the prelims to improve her season-best readout by .32 seconds. She becomes the fourth Lady Vol to hold a B-cut mark in the event, as her previous season-best time of 54.90 seconds came at the Southeastern Conference Championships a week ago.
Gelb swam in the 200y breast time trials and touched in at 2:12.07. Though already achieving a `B' cut in the 200y breast at the league meet (2:12.51), Gelb improved by almost half of a second in the event Saturday.
Ribi had the biggest improvement of any Big Orange swimmer on the day after registering a mark of 4:16.31 in the 400y IM finals. The clocking was nearly two seconds faster than her season-best time of 4:18.27 and she now ranks third on the Lady Vol performers list.
Erin Gaeckle added a third-place finish in the 100y back after a time of 56.12 seconds. She also competed in the 200y IM, touching in at 2:07.98.
The meet gives competitors a final opportunity to earn season-best performances in an effort to rise up the national lists before the NCAA Championships participants are announced.
The 2012 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will be hosted by Auburn University and will take place over March 15-17 in Auburn, Ala.
The Bulldog Last Chance Meet wraps up tomorrow with event prelims will begin at 10 a.m. ET, and finals starting at 4 p.m.
