KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Performances from senior Maria Jugan, junior Bryttany Curran and sophomore Morgan Farrell led the Lady Vol swimming and diving team on the final day of the Championship Qualifications "Last Chance" Meet on Sunday at the Allan Jones Intercollegiate Aquatic Center.
The Championship Qualifications meet gave athletes a last opportunity to improve season-bests and reach NCAA 'A' or 'B' cuts in hopes of moving up the national lists. The NCAA Championships, which is hosted by Texas A&M in College Station, Texas, from March 19-21, usually take around 30-35 participants for each individual event and between 20-24 entries for each relay.
The official list of participants at the national meet will be released Wednesday.
Jugan capped her final season in Orange and White with a new career-best time in the 100y back of 58.32, while Curran swam a season-best time of 2:15.72 in the 200y breast, just off the NCAA 'B' cut time of 2:15.53.
Farrell swam a season-best time of 54.69 in the 100y fly, while freshman Tori Richmond tied her season-best in the event with a time of 55.80. Farrell's time improves the 400y medley relay seed for the NCAA Championships. The relay was ranked 14th in the country heading into the meet.
"It was really exciting to see Maria Jugan end her career with a new career-best in the 100y back," Lady Vol head swimming coach Matt Kredich said. "Bryttany Curran swam great too. She really improved her time from SECs. Morgan Farrell's 100y fly was big because it gives us a better seed for NCAAs. We're ready to focus on the NCAA meet."
Other top performances came from sophomore Martina Moravcikova, freshman Abbie Alton and senior Ashley Quinn.
Moravcikova swam a 'B' cut time of 2:13.19 in the 100y breast, just off her personal best of 2:12.51.
Alton swam a time of 22.92 in the 50y free, just off her personal best of 22.86. Quinn was also just off her best as she swam a time of 23.12 in the "splash and dash."
