ATHENS, Ga. - On the first day of the NCAA Zone "B" Diving Championships, junior Lauren LeRoy barely missed the NCAA cut by a mere 14 points from the three-meter board at the Gabrielsen Natatorium in Athens, Ga. The Oshkosh, Wis., native tallied a seventh-place 288.25, just two spots from automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships to be held in Minneapolis, Minn., from March 8-10.
"Lauren LeRoy dove very well today," Head Diving Coach Dave Parrington said. "She had no major mistakes so that kind of made for a solid performance which would normally bode very well in this type of competition, but today she was just out of qualifying. She needs to step up at one-meter tomorrow and do well."
"Brittany Fulmer had a solid day today," Parrington said. "She had a positive attitude all day and a great performance which bodes well for her tomorrow."
Tennessee faced toughed competition in Athens as divers from Alabama, Auburn, Clemson, Duke, East Carolina, Florida, Florida Atlantic, Florida International, Florida State, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Kentucky, Louisville, LSU, Miami (Fla.), North Carolina, North Carolina State, North Florida, South Carolina and Virginia Tech competed.
There are five zone competitions taking place this weekend at different locations across the country with the top 41 female divers qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Eleven of those will come from Zone "B."
The one-meter event is scheduled to begin at noon tomorrow with the preliminary session. The platform diving is slated for a 10 a.m. start on Sunday.
