ATHENS, Ga. - A few things had to happen on the last day of the NCAA Zone "B" Diving Championships for junior Lauren LeRoy to advance to the NCAA Championships to be held March 8-10, in Minneapolis, Minn. Two of the divers who already qualified in other events had to finish in the top four for LeRoy to go to the national championship meet. As it turns out, three of the four today had already qualified, making LeRoy the 10th of 11 divers from Zone "B" to earn the trip to Minneapolis.
The Oshkosh, Wis., native's 566.40 total from Friday's three-meter diving event is the score which gave the two-time SEC Diver of the Week her first NCAA qualification.
Junior Vicky Linnell took her turn in representing the Big Orange in this afternoon's platform diving event and took 14th overall with a 448.00 total. She was 11th from that height a year ago.
"Vicky missed her second dive today, but everything else was really good," Lady Vol Head Diving Coach Dave Parrington said. "She did a really nice job today against a very deep field of divers, probably the best quality platform field I have seen."
LeRoy barely missed the cut for the finals session as she placed 19th in the preliminaries with 201.00 points.
Sophomore Staley McCartney also competed from the platform placing 21st in the prelims with a 190.75 total. A local product of Knoxville, McCartney was making her first appearance at the NCAA Zone "B" meet and entered in all three events over the weekend.
"Certainly I was very happy with all the divers' performances throughout the meet particularly Lauren's qualifying performance," Parrington said. "Staley looked very nice this weekend and did a solid job on platform."
Parrington and LeRoy will join the seven Lady Vol swimmers in Minneapolis, Minn., March 8-10, at the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships.
