KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - Sam Maccherola, Carly Mathes, Michele King and Vicky Linnell led team White to a 75-71 victory on Saturday by winning at least two individual events each at the annual intrasquad Orange and White meet.
Sophomore Maccherola won the 1000y freestyle in 10:23.84 and the 500y freestyle in 5:04.08 to bank points for the White. The Mount Airy, Md., native was also part of the second-place 400y freestyle relay, which finished in 3:30.20.
Maccherola's classmate, Mathes won the 100 and 200y freestyle as well as the 200y butterfly events. She touched the wall at 52.94 in the 100y free, 1:52.80 in the 200y free and 2:11.33 in the 200y butterfly. Mathes was also on White's only entrant in the 400y freestyle relay. The Kettering, Ohio native earned four All-America certificates as a freshman, three of which were as part of Tennessee's relay squads at the NCAA Championships.
Swimming in her first collegiate meet, freshman King was victorious in both the 100y breast (1:02.79) and 50y free (23.30). King was the No. 1-ranked high school swimmer in the country and Olympic Trials Qualifier in the 50y and 100y freestyle.
Sophomore diver Linnell won both the diving events in the meet, the one-meter and three-meter. Linnell totaled 296.63 in the one-meter and 306.83 in the three-meter to claim both victories. She finished 11th in the one-meter and ninth in the three meters at the Southeastern Conference Championships in February.
Freshman Bryttany Curran won the 200y breast for the White in 2:24.99.
Earning top-honors for the Orange were sophomore Brittany Nauta, junior Christine Magnuson and senior Megan Tomes. The Orange team also won both the relay events, the 200y medley and 400y freestyle relays.
Nauta won two events on Saturday, the 100 and 200y backstroke in 59.74 and 2:08.91 and a member of the victorious 400y freestyle relay which finished in 3:30.11. Nine-time All-American Magnuson won the 100y butterfly in 57.58. Tomes, also with nine All-America certificates, won the 200y IM and member of the 400y freestyle relay.
Tennessee will return to the Student Aquatic Center on Friday, Oct. 20, at 5 p.m. to battle Louisville.
