Simmons Clocks Olympic Trials Cut at Winter Nationals

Dec. 1, 2011

Junior Caroline Simmons finished tied for 18th in the 50-meter freestyle to open competition Thursday at the AT&T Winter National Championships at the Georgia Tech Aquatic Center in Atlanta.

Simmons swam the B-final race in 26.00 seconds during the evening session, good for an Olympic trials time. In the morning preliminary race, Simmons touched the wall in a nearly identical 26.02.

Junior teammate Abbie Alton did not qualify for the finals and finished her prelim in 26.93, tied for 73rd.

Jessica Hardy of the Trojan Swim Club won the race in a time of 25.08.

Simmons will be the only Lady Vol in action on Friday, when she will swim in the 200 freestyle.

On Saturday, Simmons and Alton are scheduled to race in the 100 freestyle, and Courtney Ciesielski will compete in the 200 butterfly.
