KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Diving Team will begin the 2008 portion of its schedule tomorrow when the Lady Vol divers take to the boards at the Georgia Diving Invitational and Shootout in Athens, Ga.
Senior Lauren LeRoy, junior Staley McCartney and freshman Jill Pierce will make the trip to Gabrielsen Natatorium for the three-day competition which will be held in a format similar to the Southeastern Conference, Zone and NCAA Championships. The top-13 divers from the preliminaries of the springboard events will compete in the finals.
Orange and White divers had success at the 2007 installment of the meet with LeRoy taking the title in the one-meter finals before winning the shootout that evening. The Oshkosh, Wis., native also picked up a third-place finish from the three-meter board. Junior Vicky Linnell ended the meet on a high note by placing third in the platform event.
Tennessee is one of 16 teams scheduled to compete this week. Florida, LSU, Auburn, Kentucky, Arkansas, Purdue, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Virginia, North Carolina, East Carolina, Drexel, Clemson, SMU and Georgia are also expected to participate.
The divers will battle from the springboards on Thursday and Friday with preliminaries beginning at noon ET each day. The finals session will follow at approximately 2:45 p.m. with the shootout slated for a 6:30 p.m. start. The shootout involves the top-six placed divers from the springboard finals. The competitor with the lowest score after each round is eliminated until two divers remain. The platform event includes just one session which begins at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
While McCartney will stay to compete from the platform, LeRoy and Pierce will return to Knoxville on Friday to join Linnell in preparing for UT’s home meet versus Northwestern on Saturday, Jan.5. The Big Orange’s meet against the Wildcats is split into two sessions beginning at 10 a.m. and 5 p.m.
