SOMERS, Wis. ??? For the first time in her collegiate career, junior Carly Mathes has been named the Division I National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week as announced by collegeswimming.com, this afternoon. Mathes contributed a team-high 27 individual points in Tennessee???s 172-128 victory over Indiana on Jan. 18.
The Kettering, Ohio, native won three individual events in the meet with the Hoosiers, as well as providing the anchor leg for the victorious 400y free relay team. Mathes demolished the competition in the 200y freestyle, as she was 2.59 seconds ahead of second-place Presley Bard of Indiana. Her time of 1:48.19 was her quickest of the season and an NCAA ???B??? cut. The All-American grabbed her second win of the day in the 100y freestyle by touching the wall in 50.97, only to turn around and post another victory and NCAA ???B??? cut in the 200y IM (2:03.69). She also anchored the 400y free relay team which took top honors in 3:26.91.
Mathes is the third Lady Vol to receive the National Swimmer of the Week honor this year. Senior Christine Magnuson was selected as the Swimmer of the Week on Nov. 1, while freshman Aleksa Akerfelds was recognized on Jan. 10.
The Lady Vols will be back in the pool on Jan. 26 with a meet at No. 2 Georgia.
