AUBURN, Ala. – Senior Vicky Linnell led the Lady Vol divers today at the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships in Auburn, Ala., with a 12th-place score of 445.55 over 10 dives. After her first five dives in the preliminaries, the Prospect, South Australia native was eighth with 232.60 points.
“Vicky started off with a couple of tough dives which put her behind,” head diving coach Dave Parrington said. “But she came back really strong and was eighth after the prelims. She couldn’t quite get it together in the second session, but she gave it her all. She had a brilliant effort and I’m very proud of what she did today.”
At the conclusion of the three-day meet, 12 women earned the right to compete at the NCAA Championships next week in Columbus, Ohio. Senior Lauren LeRoy will represent Tennessee for on the boards the second year. LeRoy, from Oshkosh, Wis., qualified for the national championship meet after placing second in the one-meter event on Friday. She was also second from three meters on Saturday.
LeRoy was 19th from the platform with a score of 189.15, today. She was followed by junior Staley McCartney in 20th. McCartney’s 186.90 total included scores of 43.20 and 50.40 on her second and third dives, respectively.
“Staley did some of her best dives,” Parrington said. “Her inward 2 ½ and armstand double [dives] were the best she has ever done in a meet, so I couldn’t be any happier with those. She had a rough first dive and last dive, but the three dives in the middle were great.”
The NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships will be held on March 20-22. Joining LeRoy will be Lady Vol swimmers Christine Magnuson, Carly Mathes, Brittany Nauta, Michele King, Jamie Saffer, Aleksa Akerfelds, Morgan Farrell, Martina Moravcikova and Tricia Weaner.
