Two Tennessee Aquatics Members Qualify for Olympic Trials

AUBURN, Ala. – Senior Christine Magnuson highlighted the performance of the Tennessee Aquatics team at the Speedo Champions Series Southern Sectional today as she won the 200m freestyle in an Olympic Trial qualifying time of 2:00.69, defeating two Olympians in the process. She also came in first in this morning’s preliminary race with a time of 2:00.68. Magnuson earned passage to the Olympic Trials in the 50m free yesterday (26.21), in addition to entries she earned at the Nashville Summer Sizzler in the 100m free (57.11) and 100m butterfly (1:01.87). Also competing in the 200m free this morning were junior Brittany Nauta (2:09.66 for 48th place) and senior Brooke Boncher (2:09.93 for 53rd place).

A 2006 Tennessee graduate, Jacque Fessel placed fourth in the finals of the 100m backstroke in an Olympic Trial qualifying time of 1:03.53 and third in the preliminaries with another OT time of 1:04.27. Nauta also swam the 100m back placing 48th in 1:09.92. Junior Maria Jugan placed 60th by touching the wall in 1:09.57.

In the 400m IM, Tiffany Clay placed eighth in the finals session by posting a 5:07.21 readout. She was seventh in this morning’s preliminary session with a time of 5:02.66.

To cap off the evening, the foursome of Magnuson, Nauta, Ashley Quinn and Boncher finished third in the 400m freestyle race in a national qualifying time of 3:54.46.

Tomorrow’s events start at 9:30 a.m. CT with the preliminaries, with the finals starting at 5:30 p.m.
