Irvine, Calif. - Lady Vols Christine Magnuson, Carly Mathes, Sarah McCall and Megan Tomes took home Tennessee's first top-ten finish at ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships on Thursday evening. The foursome clocked a time of 8:21.51 in the 800m freestyle relay to place ninth at the national championships in Irvine, Calif. Erin Reilly, Lauren Andrews, Natalie Coughlin and Emily Silver of California Aquatics crossed the finish line first in 8:08.16.
Magnuson and Tomes were members of all five relay squads to pick up points for the Big Orange at the NCAA Championships last year. The duo joined Tomes and Sam Maccherola to claim seventh in the 800y freestyle relay in Athens, Ga.
Magnuson and McCall competed earlier in the day in the preliminary rounds of the 50m freestyle and 400m IM, respectively. Magnuson's 26.81, put her 47th in the prelims, while McCall's 5:03.44 gave her a 66th-place finish. Rising senior Tiffany Clay claimed 30th in the preliminary round of the 100m breaststroke event, but failed to qualify for the finals as well.
Magnuson and Mathes will compete on Saturday in the 100m freestyle race, while Clay will swim the 200m breaststroke.
