Magnuson Places Fourth in 100m Fly

CHIBA, Japan – Swimming in arguably her best event today, Lady Vol Christine Magnuson placed fourth in the 100m butterfly with a personal-best time of 58.56 at the Japan International Grand Prix in Chiba, Japan. Magnuson qualified to compete in Japan as a member of the U.S. National Team by posting a then-personal-best 58.76 (the 13th fastest in the world at the time) in the 100m fly on Aug. 2, at the ConocoPhillips USA Swimming National Championships in Indianapolis, Ind.

Earlier in the week, Magnuson helped the U.S.’s 400m freestyle relay squad to third place by registering the fastest 100m split time (54.32) on the team, third fastest in the event. The Tinley Park, Ill., native also placed sixth (55.19) in the 100m freestyle and helped the 800m free relay team to fourth place with her fastest anchor-leg spit of 1:59.20, yesterday. She will compete in the 50m freestyle tomorrow.

Magnuson had a breakout year last year as a junior by winning her first gold medal at the Southeastern Conference Championships and placing fourth in the NCAA Championships, both in the 100m butterfly. With her senior year approaching, Magnuson is the Lady Vol record-holder in the 100y and 200y freestyle, 100y butterfly and is a member of every fastest relay squad in Lady Vol history.
