Magnuson Concludes Japan International Grand Prix

CHIBA, Japan – On the final day of the Japan International Grand Prix in Chiba, Japan, Lady Vol Christine Magnuson qualified for the “A” finals of the 50m freestyle and placed seventh with a time of 25.78. The senior was sixth in the preliminaries after touching the wall in 26.01. Magnuson has been representing the United States in the four-day meet and has competed in the finals each time.

From Tinley Park, Ill., Magnuson qualified for the national team on Aug. 2 by clocking a then-personal-best 58.76 in the 100m butterfly, a time she bested by two-tenths of a second yesterday. Earlier in the week, Magnuson helped the U.S.’s 400m freestyle relay squad to third place by registering the fastest 100m split time (54.32) on the team, third fastest in the event. She also placed sixth (55.19) in the 100m freestyle and helped the 800m free relay team to fourth place with her fastest anchor-leg spit of 1:59.20.

Magnuson had a breakout year last year as a junior by winning her first gold medal at the Southeastern Conference Championships and placing fourth in the NCAA Championships, both in the 100m butterfly. With the collegiate season approaching, Magnuson is the Lady Vol record-holder in the 100y and 200y freestyle, 100y butterfly and is a member of every fastest relay squad in Lady Vol history.
