LAS VEGAS, Tenn.
The Tennessee Lady Vol tandem of sophomore Sabita Maharaj and junior Ashley Robards registered an impressive 8-6 upset of No. 1 seeded Alice Barnes and Theresa Logar of Stanford to move into the semifinals of doubles play at the Freeman Memorial Tennis Championships on Saturday. The Orange and White duo will now face 41st-ranked Kendall Cline and Aniela Mojzis of North Carolina in Sunday's semifinal round.
UT senior Tammy Encina, meanwhile, advanced to the semifinals of the singles draw, before falling to No. 84 Theresa Logar of Stanford, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0. Earlier in the day, Encina had defeated Georgia's Jitka Schonfeldova by default in the quarterfinal round.
In other singles play, UT junior Majen Immink and freshman Blakeley Griffith each advanced to the semifinals of consolation play where they unfortunately had to square off against one another. Griffith, however, got the best of Immink on this day, as the freshman earned a 7-5, 6-2 victory to advance to Sunday's consolation final. Also in consolation play, Maharaj, Robards and freshman Victoria Jones each earned straight-set victories for the Big Orange.
The Freeman Memorial Championships wrap up on Sunday with championship matches in both singles and doubles. After returning from Las Vegas, the Lady Vols will head north to battle No. 75 Indiana on Sat., Jan. 24 in Bloomington, Ind., and No. 48 Ohio State on Sun., Jan. 25 in Columbus, Ohio, in their first two dual matches of the year.
