MADISON, Wis.

The 23rd-ranked Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team fell to the No. 7 Washington Huskies, 6-1, in opening round action of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) National Team Indoor Championships on Thursday.

The Orange and White got off to a strong start in doubles play, as all three Lady Vol tandems recorded wins to seize the doubles point for UT. In fact, all three matches went down to the wire as each was decided in a tiebreaker.

Junior Breanna Kray (Surrey, B.C., Canada) and freshman Blakeley Griffith (Middleburg, Va.) downed Dinka Hadzic and Saskia Nauenberg, 9-8(3), at No. 3 doubles to start thing off for UT. Lady Vol sophomore Sabita Maharaj (Gainesville, Fla.) and junior Ashley Robards (Henderson, Ky.) followed that effort with a 9-8(6) win over Mugette Ahn and Erin Hoe at No. 2 doubles. Senior Tammy Encina (Miami Beach, Fla.) and sophomore Melissa Schaub (Lexington, Ohio) finished off the Big Orange sweep with a 9-8(4) victory over 29th-ranked Claire Carter and Dea Sumantri at the No. 1 spot.

Singles play, however, was all Washington, as the Huskies claimed each of the six individual matches. The highlight of singles competition was a hard-fought match between 35th-ranked Carter of UW and 13th-ranked Encina of UT at the No. 1 position. Carter claimed the first set, 7-6(2), but Encina rebounded with a 7-6(4) win in the second set to even things up. The grueling match finally came to an end, however, when Carter registered a 6-3 win in set three to seal the victory.

In other singles matches, 49th-ranked Sumantri downed 86th-ranked Maharaj, 6-0, 6-4, at the No. 2 spot, Hoe defeated 96th-ranked Robards, 3-6, 7-5, 6-0, in the No. 3 position, Hadzic posted a 6-2, 6-4 win over Griffith at No. 4 singles, 90th-ranked Nauenberg outlasted freshman Victoria Jones (Tyne & Wear, U.K.), 6-4, 3-6, 6-2, at the No. 5 spot, and Ahn dropped Schaub by a 6-1, 6-2 count in the No. 6 position.

With the win, Washington improves to 4-0 this season, while UT falls to 3-2. The Huskies also hold a 2-1 advantage in the all-time series against Tennessee.

The Indoor Championships will continue with championship and consolation play through Sunday. The Lady Vols will next face 14th-ranked William & Mary in Friday's consolation round, while UW takes on No. 6 Vanderbilt in the tournament's second round.

After returning from Madison, Tennessee battles No. 73 Wake Forest on Sat., Feb. 14 in Winston-Salem, N.C., before returning home to face No. 10 North Carolina at 1 p.m. on Sun., Feb. 15.
