UT ADVANCES AT TEAM INDOOR CHAMPIONSHIP WITH 6-1 WIN OVER ODU
Vilmarie Castellvi won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2

Vilmarie Castellvi won in straight sets 6-2, 6-2

Feb. 7, 2002

MADISON, Wis.

The University of Tennessee Lady Volunteer tennis team captured a 6-1 victory over Old Dominion on Thursday at the USTA-ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships in Madison, Wis. to advance to the second round. The Orange and White will face Southeastern Conference rival Georgia at 3:30 on Friday in a rematch of the 2000 SEC championship match.

UT entered the contest with a 1-0 lead when ODU fielded only five players because of injuries. The Lady Monarch's were in danger of going down 2-0 early with just two doubles teams competing. Both would have to deliver to even the match score. After junior Crystal Cleveland and senior Alison Ojeda, ranked 12th as a pair, were upset by No. 16 Nataly Cahana and Ana Radelijevic, 8-5, the 45th-rated tandem of Vilmarie Castellvi and Agnes Wiski dealt Mily Kannarkat and Julia Sotiriu an 8-3 setback to claim the one doubles point for UT.

Entering singles play with a 2-0 cushion, The Lady Vols dropped just one match. Ojeda upset No. 5 Cahana with a 7-5, 6-0 victory at No. 1 and Castellvi extended her singles winning streak to nine consecutive matches with a straight-set, 6-2, 6-2 triumph over Radelijevic. Wiski brought home the No. 4 match with a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Sotiriu and Cleveland upped the score to 6-0 with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Patricia Araujo at No. 5. Senior Kim Gates was the lone Lady Vol to falter, dropping a 7-5, 6-2 decision to Kannarkat.

The win propels the Lady Vols into the tourney's final eight for the third time in UT's 10 appearances. It is the first time since 1998 that the Orange has been victorious in the first round at the National Team Indoors.

Tennessee is now 4-0 overall against the Lady Monarchs.

UT, 4-1, and Georgia, 4-0, have met just once before in this tournament, back in 1992 when UGA took a 5-2 victory from the Lady Vols in the second round. Overall, Georgia leads its series with Tennessee by a 29-3 margin. Last season, the teams split two meetings as Mike Patrick and Sonia Hahn-Patrick's squad edged the Lady Bulldogs 4-3 in the regular season, only to see UGA take 5-2 victory in the SEC title match. Georgia advanced with a 6-1 win over Baylor.

Tennessee will meet Georgia at 3:30 on Friday. The USTA-ITA National Women's Team Indoor Championships will run through Sunday.
