Box Score

ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The 22nd-ranked University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team's (2-5) contest with No. 30 Michigan (3-3) on Sunday was not decided until the last few minutes, but it was the Wolverines who came out on top with wins in the final three singles contests to be completed, 5-2.

Michigan took the first doubles match to finish when the Lady Vol freshman duo of Stephanie Harris (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Samantha Orlin (Miami, Fla.) dropped an 8-1 decision to UM's Lindsey Howard and Nina Yaftali. In the No. 1 position, senior Melissa Schaub (Lexington, Ohio) and sophomore Ghizela Schutte (Ninapark, South Africa) earned an 8-5 win against Kara Delicata and Debra Streifler.

The junior tandem of Blakeley Griffith (Middleburg, Va.) and Victoria Jones (Tyne & Wear, U.K.) kept their hot season going with an 8-6 win against Elizabeth Exon and Chisako Sugiyama. The two have earned a 7-2 mark so far this season and a 6-1 record in dual matches, all at the No. 2 position. The win clinched the doubles point for Tennessee for the third time this season, but, unfortunately for the Lady Vols, it would prove to be the first occurrence that a team win did not follow.

At No. 2 singles, Griffith dropped her match in straight sets to No. 48 Yaftali, 6-2, 6-4. The junior has had a challenging schedule to date as she has played nationally-ranked opponents in 6-of-7 dual matches, the most of any member of the team.

Michigan took a 2-1 lead when Harris lost her contest at court six to Howard, 6-3, 6-4. Orlin took that advantage away with a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win against Sugiyama on the fifth court.

At court four, Schutte battled back from a first-set loss to force a third and deciding frame for the third time in 2006, but was not victorious as she had been the previous two times, falling to No. 76 Streifler, 6-4, 5-7, 6-3.

At this point, Michigan led, 3-2, and Schaub was early in the third set of her match while Jones was battling Delicata at the first court, trailing the third stanza, 5-4. She dramatically held serve to tie the set, 5-5, but would fall to the Wolverine, 6-4, 3-6, 7-5.

In the final contest to be completed, Schaub dropped a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 decision to Exon at court four.

The Lady Vols will end the month of February with another trip to Big Ten country, taking on No. 32 Indiana and Ohio State next weekend. The match with the Hoosiers begins at 10 a.m. on Saturday, while the Big Orange plays OSU at 11 a.m. next Sunday.
