BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - No. 37 Indiana (9-2) proved to be too much for the 10th-ranked University of Tennessee women's tennis team (6-3), as the Lady Vols dropped the dual-match decision to the Hoosiers, 5-1, at the IU Tennis Center in Bloomington, Ind. Senior Caitlin Whoriskey was the lone member of the Big Orange squad to pick up a singles victory in the Sunday morning contest.
While doubles typically favors UT, it was ultimately Indiana coming away with two of the three matches and the doubles point. At the second position, the No. 20 duo of junior Rosalía Alda and senior Zsófia Zubor was defeated by IU's Lindsey Stuckey and Evgeniya Vertesheva, 8-5. Clinching the point for Indiana was Leslie Hureau and Charlotte Martin. The two downed the Lady Vol combo of Katie Lee and Jennifer Meredith behind the same 8-5 score.
Whoriskey and junior partner Maria Sorbello were able to prevent a Hoosier's sweep by securing an 8-6 victory over Myriam Sopel and Katya Zapadalova, in the No. 1 lineup spot.
In singles play, seventh-ranked Whoriskey put the Orange and White into a 1-1 tie with a dominating 6-2, 6-1 triumph over Vertesheva on court one. That would be all UT would get, however, as Indiana claimed the final four contests.
No. 37 Sorbello was the next Lady Vol to go, dropping a 6-3, 7-5 decision at the hands of Hureau at the fourth lineup slot. Although Zubor pushed her match to three sets, she was unable to overcome Sopel, falling 6-3, 2-6, 7-5.
Zapadalova won a tightly contested bout with Alda, 2-6, 7-5, 7-6, (7-5), to clinch the team completion for the Hoosiers. Stuckey closed out the dual-match for Indiana by defeating UT's Lee in straight-sets, 6-2, 6-3.
Tennessee has a short break at home before heading back to the Midwest for a 10 a.m. contest against No. 17 Notre Dame on Sunday, Feb. 28, at the Courtney Tennis Center in Notre Dame, Ind. The Lady Vols will then welcome Auburn and Alabama to Rocky Top, March 5 and 7, respectively, for their first Southeastern Conference matches of the season.
