Henderson Leads WTennis To Win At Indiana

Feb. 23, 2014

UT

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The match came down to Joanna Henderson's court and the junior leader did not disappoint helping the No. 27 University of Tennessee women's tennis team to a 4-3 win at No. 37 Indiana Sunday afternoon.

With the match tied at three-all, Henderson took a 4-1 lead in the third set of her No. 2 singles match. The Aberdeen, Scotland native had her serve broken as Indiana's Carolyn Chupa came within just a point.

But Henderson broke back to gain a 5-3 lead and served her way to the 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 victory, her first win over a ranked opponent this season and second career victory over a ranked foe.

With the win, the Lady Vols improved to 4-4 on the season, 19-13 all-time against Indiana and 8-8 in Bloomington.

Tennessee fell behind early after dropping the doubles point. Ambika Pande and Brittany Lindl fell on court three 8-2 followed by an 8-3 loss on court one for Henderson and Laurence Guevremont. Eve Repic and Victoria Olivarez finished things out with an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles over No. 44 ranked Sophie Garre and Kayla Fujimoto.

The momentum from UT's final doubles match carried into singles as the Lady Vols earned first set wins on four of the six courts.

Brittany Lindl tied things up at one-all as she cruised to a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Paula Gutierrez.

Tennessee added to its lead when Tiffany Tavares downed Shannon Murdy 6-1, 6-4 on court six but Indiana tied things up at two as No. 81 Garre bested Guevremont 6-2, 6-2 at No. 3 singles.

Indiana regained its lead when Alecia Kauss beat Victoria Olivarez 6-4, 6-3 at No. 4 singles, but Tennessee rounded out the day with consecutive victories to seal the win.

No. 63 Repic downed No. 65 Katie Klyczek 6-4, 6-4 on court one, her second win over a ranked opponent this weekend leaving it all in the hands of Henderson.

The Lady Vols return to action next Saturday in their SEC Opener at Georgia at 12 p.m.
