No. 3 Florida Bests WTennis 7-0

KNOXVILLE - Despite a hard fought effort, the University of Tennessee women's tennis team fell 7-0 Friday night to No. 3 Florida at the Goodfriend Tennis Center.

The Lady Vols (4-8, 0-4 SEC) had opportunities to capitalize, but were unable to finish as Florida (12-2, 4-0) swept UT for the sixth straight meeting.

The Lady Vols battled during doubles play taking it down to the wire on courts one and three. Florida started out with an 8-1 win at No. 2 doubles as No. 35 Kourtney Keegan and Olivia Janowicz defeated Brittany Lindl and Laurence Guevremont.

Eve Repic and Victoria Olivarez were down 3-0 early but came back to make it a 4-5 match with No. 24 Sofie Oyen and Belinda Woolcock. The Gators fought back and edged UT 8-5 on court one two capture the doubles point and head into singles with a 1-0 lead.

On court three, Joanna Henderson and Tiffany Tavares, playing together for the second straight match had a 5-4 lead over their Gator opponents when play was suspended.

Florida took a 2-0 lead as Tavares fell 6-0, 6-1 on court six to No. 44 Kourtney Keegan and gained a 3-0 advantage as Repic dropped her match with No. 8 Oliva Janowicz 6-2, 6-2.

The Lady Vols battled on courts 3, 4, and 5 on the night going back-and-forth with the Gators and forcing first set tie breaks on courts three and five.

Olivarez gained early leads in sets one and two on court four but fell in the final games as Florida captured the match while No. 38 Oyen defeated Olivarez 6-4, 6-4.

Lindl and Guevremont pushed their opponents to first set tiebreaks, as Lindl dropped hers 7-2, while Guevremont had a 5-4 advantage in hers before Alexandra Cercone rallied off three straight points to capture the first set.

In the second set both Lady Vols ran out of gas and were defeated 6-1.

The Lady Vols will be back in action on Sunday, March 16 when they take on No. 54 South Carolina at 1 p.m. inside at the Goodfriend Tennis Center or outside at Barksdale Stadium, depending on the weather.
