Box Score

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The No. 22 University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team (9-8, 5-2 Southeastern Conference) saw its four-match winning streak come to an end at the hands of 11th-ranked Vanderbilt (16-2, 7-0 SEC) by a 7-0 score on Friday afternoon.

The first doubles match to finish saw the Lady Vol pair of freshmen Samantha Orlin (Miami, Fla.) and Hayley Prendergast (Hingham, Mass.) fall to Courtney Ulery and Maggie Yahner at court three by an 8-1 score.

The No. 1 Lady Vol tandem of senior Melissa Schaub (Lexington, Ohio) and sophomore Ghizela Schutte (Ninapark, South Africa) earned an 8-6 win over Amanda Fish and Amanda Tyalor.

The doubles point would reside with the winner at court two, which saw juniors Blakeley Griffith (Middleburg, Va.) and Victoria Jones (Tyne & Wear, U.K.) drop an 8-6 decision to Taka Bertrand and Carolina Ferrell.

After Tennessee forfeited No. 6 singles, Vanderbilt would secure the remaining five singles contests. At No. 1, Jones fell to No. 20 Fish, 6-1, 6-0, while Schutte dropped a 6-0, 7-5 decision at court five to Ferrell. The third court saw Griffith lose to No. 75 Taylor, 6-0, 7-6 (7-5).

At No. 2, Schaub lost to 40th-ranked Bertrand, 6-0, 7-5. The fourth court was the sight of Tennessee's lone set win, as Orlin could not keep a four-match winning streak alive, falling to Ulery, 7-6 (7-5), 0-6, 6-3. She was playing her first contest at 4 since March 5, as Orlin had played five straight contests, and won the last four, in the fifth position.

The Lady Vols return to action on Sunday and take on No. 28 Kentucky (12-6, 5-1 SEC and currently playing No. 25 Georgia) at noon. Tennessee plays its final two home contests of 2006 next weekend, taking on No. 61 Ole Miss at 5 p.m. next Friday and Mississippi State at 1 p.m. on April 9.
