OXFORD, Miss. - For the 13th-consecutive season, the University of Tennessee women's tennis team (10-8, 5-4 Southeastern Conference) has reached double-digits in dual-match victories, recording its 10th of the year with a 5-2 triumph over Ole Miss (4-15, 0-8 SEC) Friday afternoon at the Palmer/Salloum Tennis Center in Oxford, Miss. Senior Victoria Jones continued her recent run of success, moving her current singles win streak to five.
"It's always good to get a win on the road in the SEC," UT co-head coach Sonia Hahn-Patrick said. "It was pretty cold and windy out there today, but our team fought through it and put forth a good effort. With only two more matches before the SEC Tournament we need to build on the success we have had in the last week and continue to improve each day."
The Orange and White were the first to crack the scoreboard, cruising through doubles play with victories in all three matches. The Tennessee tandem of freshman Caitlin Whoriskey and Zsófia Zubor got the squad off to a quick start, defeating UM's Ilona Somers and Soledad Podlipnik, 8-1, on center court.
The UT pairing of sophomore Samantha Orlin and senior Blakeley Griffith then gave its team the initial advantage of the match with an easy, 8-2, win over Nika Koukhartchouk and Kseniia Tokarieava at the No. 2 position. Freshman Connor Vogel and Jones rounded out the doubles sweep at the third spot, claiming an 8-6 decision over Preethi Subramanian and Carlin Cochran.
The Big Orange kept rolling in the singles portion of the contest, earning victories in the first four matches to clinch its 10th team win of the season. Whoriskey moved the score to 2-0 in favor of UT when her opponent at the No. 3 position, Tokarieva, was forced to retire after just one point. That advantage continued to increase when Zubor easily dispatched Cochran, 6-0, 6-1, at the final spot in the lineup.
Orlin made the win official by putting up the team's fourth point of the afternoon, taking out Podlipnik, 6-3, 6-4, on the fourth court. Jones added a 6-4, 6-2 victory of her own at the fifth slot over Subramanian to round out UT's scoring on the day.
With the outcome already decided, the Lady Rebels' closed out the match with a pair of super-tiebreaker triumphs for their only two points. Vogel fell 5-7, 6-2, 0-1 (5-10) to Koukhartchouk at No. 2, while the 35th-ranked Griffith dropped a tough, 4-6, 6-4, 0-1 (10-12) result to No. 74 Somers on center court.
The Lady Vols will finish off the road portion of their schedule Sunday afternoon, when they continue their tour of the Magnolia State with a visit to Starkville to face No. 75 Mississippi State (5-11, 1-8 SEC). Play will begin at 2 p.m. ET at the A.J. Pitts Tennis Centre. Following this weekend's action, Tennessee will return to Rocky Top to conclude the regular-season portion of its slate. The Big Orange will honor Jones and Griffith on "Senior Day," as No. 3 Georgia makes its way to Knoxville. First serve is set for Noon on April 14 at the UT Varsity Courts.
