URBANA, Ill. - In the first round of the NCAA Singles Championship Tuesday, University of Tennessee women's tennis senior Kata Szekely advanced on to the second round of action while junior Brynn Boren fell to her ranked opponent.
No. 38 ranked Szekely defeated No. 32 Lorraine Guillermo of Pepperdine in the first round with a 6-4, 6-2 victory to move on to a second round match with either No. 1 seed Lauren Embree of Florida or Jacqueline Cako of Arizona State, Thursday.
Boren, ranked 24th in the country, took her match to three sets but fell 4-6, 6-2, 3-6 to 12th ranked Julie Elbaba of Virginia.
This marks the second time in her career that Szekely has advanced to the second round of the singles tournament.
The fourth-seeded doubles team of Boren and Szekely will begin doubles action on Thursday against Angelina Jogasuria and Prang Pantusart of Akron. The time of the match will be determined later Wednesday.
