STANFORD, Calif. - The University of Tennessee Lady Vol tennis team officially saw its 2010-11 season come to a close with a loss by the doubles tandem of Natalie Pluskota and Brynn Boren in the second round of the NCAA Doubles Championships on Friday afternoon at the Taube Family Tennis Center.
Facing the No. 6-rated tandem of Keri Wong and Josipa Bek of Clemson, Pluskota and Boren dropped the first set, 6-1, before tightening up and giving Bek and Wong a battle to the bitter end.
After falling behind 3-1 in the second frame, Pluskota and Boren battled back to force a tiebreaker. Both teams traded points before the Lady Vols were able to take the tiebreaker, 10-8, forcing a match-deciding third set.
The third frame was a back-and-forth nail biter, which was eventually decided in a tiebreaker. Bek and Wong ultimately proved to be too much for the Lady Vols, taking the tiebreaker, 7-1. The win advances the Clemson duo to Saturday's quarterfinals.
The loss officially concludes the 2010-11 season for Tennessee. The Orange and White had an extremely successful campaign, sweeping the singles and doubles titles at the ITA Ohio Valley Region Championships, finishing second in the Southeastern Conference and earning its 16th straight berth in the NCAA Championships.
