AUBURN, Ala. - The University of Tennessee women's tennis team began play in the 2010 fall tournament season on Friday at the SEC Fall Coaches' Classic at the Yarbrough Tennis Center.
Despite playing in their first-ever NCAA competition, the newcomers performed very well on day one.
Boren, Nichols and Wofford each won their respective singles matches, while Nichols and Wofford teamed up for a doubles win.
A five-star recruit out of high school, Boren recorded her first career win by way of a three-set victory over Maho Kawase of Georgia in singles flight 2B. Wofford and Nichols each took their matches in straight sets in singles flights 4B and 5A, respectively.
McMurry, a Knoxville native who graduated from Bearden High School, opened her career by dropping a tough decision to Florida's Brittany Borsanyi in flight 5B, 6-3, 6-2.
Senior Rosalía Alda, the lone upperclassman making the trip, competed in the top flight of both singles and doubles, falling to No. 31 Nadja Gilchrist of Georgia in singles, 6-2, 6-4. Alda teamed up with Boren to take on the nation's No. 2-rated doubles team, Courtney McLane and Alexa Guarachi of Alabama. The Crimson Tide prevailed, 8-3.
The Lady Vols will be back in action tomorrow on day two of the SEC Fall Coaches' Classic. Results will be available on UTLadyVols.com shortly after the competition.
