St. Mary's Classic Brackets

Day one of the 2005 St. Mary's Classic got under way despite the wet weather. Due to the rain, all three rounds of doubles competition were held Friday, Sept. 16 at the Goodfriend Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn., and some were moved to the Knoxville Racquet Club. First and second rounds of singles competition will be played on Saturday.

In first flight doubles play, the duo of junior Blakeley Griffith and sophomore Bryce Marable came up short in a tough first match against Barbara Orlay and Alejandra Guerra of North Carolina State in a tie breaker, 9-8. In their second round match against Kentucky's Kim Coventry and Joelle Schwenk, the Big Orange duo came out on top 8-7. In the third round match Griffith and Marable lost to the team of Ashlee Davis and Alexandra Hirsch of Wake Forest, 8-1. The Lady Vols finished in fourth-place in the first flight of doubles.

In the second flight of doubles competition, junior Vicky Jones and freshman Stephanie Harris teamed up and beat Agustina Arechavaleta and Neils Barringer of North Carolina State 8-3. In round two the duo faced Wake Forest's Anna Jerman and Christian Tara, but lost 8-4. Round three saw the Lady Vols face a pair from Wake Forest, Jenna Loeb and Christine Simpson, but were unsuccessful and settled for a fourth place finish.

Flight three matches were moved to the Knoxville Racquet Club due to morning rain. Sophomore Ghizela Schutte and freshman Samantha Orlin teamed up in flight three against Kentucky's Liis Sober and Caroline Winebrenner. The Lady Vols came out on top with an 8-2 win. Tennessee then moved on to face Furman's Shannon Moore and Lauren Tomory, but this time came up short 8-5. Schutte and Orlin then bounced back and beat North Carolina State's Julia Roach and Ellen Stahl Johansson 8-2 to bring home a third place finish.

Day two of competition will be held Saturday, Sept. 17 and will see the first and second rounds of singles play beginning at 9 a.m at the Goodfriend Tennis Center and UT's Varsity Courts.
