St. Mary's Classic Brackets

The University of Tennessee women's tennis team started out day two of the 2005 St. Mary's Classic strong as five of the six players won their first singles match-ups of the day. Due to Friday's wet weather, today's competition consisted of the first and second rounds of singles play.

Lady Vol junior Vicky Jones (Tyne & Wear, U.K.) started off singles flight one action against Wake Forest's Ashlee Davis. Davis proved to be too much for Jones as the Tennessee player dropped its first match 0-6 and 6-7. In round two action for Jones, she dropped her second match of the day to Hala Sufi of Purdue, 2-6 and 2-6.

In the second flight of singles action, junior Blakeley Griffith (Middleburg, Va.) defeated first-round opponent Brooke Beier of Purdue 7-6 and 6-1. Griffith then came away with the win in a hard-fought victory over Joelle Schwenk of Kentucky. Griffith will now advance to Sunday's final flight two match-up against Alexandra Hirsch of Wake Forest.

In the singles flight three match-up, sophomore Bryce Marable (Darien, Ill.) dropped the first set to Lara Mauer of Kentucky, then rallied to take the match in three sets, 1-6, 6-2 and 6-1. Marable then moved on to face Purdue's Randi Schuler. Marable dropped this match in a hard-fought three-set match 1-6, 6-2, 6-1, and will play Sunday, Sept. 18 against Julia Roach of N.C. State.

Sophomore Ghizela Schutte (Ninapark, South Africa) started the fourth flight of singles with a win over Furman's Shannon Moore in straight sets 6-3 and 6-3. Schutte then advanced to take on Christian Tara of Wake Forest, taking the victory in three sets, 5-7, 6-2. and 6-2. Schutte will play in her flight's final match Sunday, Sept. 18 in day three action.

Singles fifth flight competition saw action between Lady Vol freshman Stephanie Harris (Chattanooga, Tenn.) and Jacqueline Eckert of Furman. Two sets is all it took for Harris to come out on top 6-1 and 6-3. In round-two, Harris saw action against Rice's Dominique Karas, dropping the match 6-7 and 2-6.

Another Lady Vol newcomer Samantha Orlin (Miami, Fla.) made her collegiate debut in fine fashion with a pair of wins. Orlin won her first-round match of flight six by default, due to a player withdrawal. The freshman then moved on to Neils Barringer of North Carolina State and recorded a win in straight sets, 6-2 and 6-2. Orlin advances to Sunday's final sixth flight match-up against Wake Forest's Blakely Offutt.
