The University of Tennessee women's tennis team closed out the 2005 St. Mary's Classic in successful fashion on Sunday, Sept. 18. The team picked up a pair of singles titles as well as a second-place honor.
Lady Vol junior Vicky Jones (Tyne & Wear, U.K.) took the win over Furman's Laura Gioia in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-2. Jones ended the day with a seventh-place finish in her flight.
In flight two, junior Blakeley Griffith (Middleburg, Va.) played in the final match-up against Alexandra Hirsch of Wake Forest. Griffith came up short losing 4-6 and 0-6, earning a second-place showing for the weekend in flight two.
Flight three saw action with sophomore Bryce Marable (Darien, Ill.) up against Sierra Poske of Wake Forest. Marable took the match in straight sets, 6-3 and 6-1. The Big Orange settled for a third-place finish in flight three.
Lady Vol sophomore Ghizela Schutte (Ninapark, South Africa) won her flight final against Purdue's Mallory Voelker, claiming a 6-1, 7-5 victory.
In flight five action, freshman Stephanie Harris (Chattanooga, Tenn.) took on Alejandra Guerra of North Carolina State. Unfortunately for the newcomer, she was unable to come away with the win, dropping the match 3-6 and 1-4. Harris finished singles competition with a fourth-place honor.
The sixth flight saw the finals match-up between another Lady Vol newcomer, Samantha Orlin (Miami, Fla.) and Blakely Offutt of Wake Forest. Orlin came out on top in this one in straight sets, 6-1 and 6-4, to earn the first-place honor of her flight.
Next up for the Lady Vols is the Furman Fall Classic in Greenville, S.C. Sept. 30-Oct. 2.
