KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

The University of Tennessee women's tennis team had a successful first day at the St. Mary's Fall Tennis Classic on Friday, Sept. 19, as seven players won their singles matches, while a pair of Lady Vol tandems snared two victories apiece to advance to the finals of their respective flights tomorrow.

With last year's No. 1-ranked collegiate player, Vilmarie Castellvi, having graduated to the professional ranks, senior Tammy Encina showed she has got what it takes to fill Tennessee's top spot, as she cruised by No. 75 Amy Walgenbach of Purdue in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3, in the first flight. Encina, ranked 27th nationally, will face No. 36 Jessica Roland of Texas A&M on Saturday at 1 p.m.

Other Lady Vols who claimed singles victories on Friday and advanced to tomorrow's semifinals include Sabita Maharaj, Blakeley Griffith, Victoria Jones, Erin Cohn and Claudia Farace. Also advancing to the semifinals is junior Ashley Robards, who had a first-round bye. Senior Melinda Morrow defeated Emily Howard of Ohio State, 6-3, 6-1, in round-robin action and will play again on Sunday against North Carolina State's Allison Barry.

In first flight doubles play, Encina and Jones defeated Roland and Vieira of Texas A&M, 8-6, and Zuccarini and Haynor of Purdue, 8-4, en route to a championship showdown with the nation's fourth-ranked combo, Cline and Mojzis of North Carolina, on Saturday afternoon. Tennessee's pairing of Maharaj and Griffith will also meet a North Carolina duo, Bairos and Long, in the finals of flight three after racking up two triumphs on Friday, coasting by Romero and Stadelman of North Carolina State, 8-4, and Welch and Eckert of Furman, 8-3.

Also claiming a doubles win for the Lady Vols were Cohn and Farace, who will compete for third-place honors on Saturday against Howard and Bryan of Ohio State.

Saturday's action will begin with singles competition at 9 a.m. and will wrap up with doubles play in the afternoon. All matches will be held at UT Varsity Courts and Goodfriend Tennis Center.
