The University of Tennessee women's tennis team kept up the momentum built on the first day of the St. Mary's Fall Tennis Classic with a successful second round of play on Saturday, Sept. 20. Five Lady Vols advanced to their respective flight finals, while the doubles contingent captured a victory.

"It was a good day to gain experience for the team." Co-Head Coach Mike Patrick said. "We faced some good competition and learned what we need to work on over the next few weeks. Today's competition showed where we can get better, and also demonstrated where we have some strengths."

No. 27 Tammy Encina continued her impressive play at the tournament by downing No. 36 Jessica Roland of Texas A&M in straight sets, 7-6(4), 6-1, in the first flight. Encina will face No. 31 Aniela Mojzis of North Carolina in the flight final on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Other Lady Vols who claimed singles victories on Saturday and advanced to tomorrow's finals include Ashley Robards, Sabita Maharaj, Blakeley Griffith and Claudia Farace. Also notching a win in her bracket was Breanna Kray. Robards hopes to keep knocking down ranked players as she faces No. 81 Katie Martzolf of Wake Forest in the second-flight final after dominating No. 99 Kendall Cline of North Carolina, 6-0, 6-0. Senior Melinda Morrow will face Allison Barry of North Carolina State tomorrow for the Round Robin championship.

In doubles action, UT struggled to a 1-3 record on the day. Kray and Robards seized the UT win with an 8-2 thrashing of Purdue's Sufi and Rodriguez to take fifth place in flight two. Encina and Jones dropped a tight championship contest with the No. 4 ranked tandem of Cline and Mojzis of North Carolina, 9-7, in flight one, while Maharaj and Griffith were defeated by North Carolina's Bairos and Long in the flight three final, 8-3. Erin Cohn and Farace rounded out UT's doubles effort by falling to fourth place after a loss to Ohio State's Howard and Bryan, 8-4.

Sunday's action will begin with singles competition at 9 a.m. and will wrap up with play in the afternoon. All matches will be held at UT Varsity Courts and Goodfriend Tennis Center.
