KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

The University of Tennessee women's tennis team continued its strong showing at the St. Mary's Fall Tennis Classic, claiming four singles titles in the final day of competition on Sunday. Senior Tammy Encina (Miami Beach, Fla.), junior Ashley Robards (Henderson, Ky.), sophomore Sabita Maharaj (Gainesville, Fla.) and freshman Blakeley Griffith (Middleburg, Va.) each won their respective flights for the Lady Vols.

"I think the most important thing about this weekend was finding out where we were after graduating two of our best players ever in Vilmarie Castellvi and Crystal Cleveland," UT Co-Head Coach Mike Patrick said. "The tournament showed that our players were up to that challenge, although we still have a lot to work on and improve upon. I am really impressed with the work ethic of our team though. We have reason to feel positive about the season."

Encina, rated 27th in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association preseason rankings, took out No. 31 Aniela Mojzis of North Carolina 6-4, 6-4 in the flight one final. It marked the third day in a row that Encina had defeated a ranked opponent, having beaten No. 36 Jessica Roland of Texas A&M in the semifinals on Saturday and No. 75 Amy Walgenback of Purdue in the first round on Friday.

Robards claimed the flight two title by defeating a ranked foe for the second straight day. The Bluegrass State native downed No. 81 Katie Martzolf of Wake Forest 6-3, 7-5 on Sunday, after having defeated No. 99 Kendall Cline of UNC a day earlier.

Maharaj, meanwhile, defeated Caitlin Collins of UNC 6-4, 6-4 to win flight three, while Griffith breezed by Lee Bairos of UNC 6-3, 6-3 to claim flight four. Freshman Victoria Jones (Tyne & Wear, U.K.) took out Purdue's Alyssa Rodriguez in straight sets, 6-2, 6-5, to place third in flight five. Junior Breanna Kray (Surrey British Columbia) fell to Elizabeth Proctor of Wake Forest 7-5, 6-2 to place sixth in flight six. Junior Erin Cohn (Richardson, Texas) lost to Ohio State's Kristin Messmer 6-4, 6-2 to place fourth in flight seven. In the flight eight championship match, junior Claudia Farace (Baltimore, Md.) had to settle for second place, falling to Blakely Offutt of Wake Forest 6-3, 6-2. Additionally, senior Melinda Morrow (Montgomery, Ala.) cruised by NC State's Allison Barry 6-0, 6-3 in the singles round robin.

The Lady Vols compete next at the adidas Fall Tournament in Peachtree City, Ga., over Sept. 26-28.
