CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The University of Tennessee women's tennis team concluded its stay at the University of Virginia Invitational with a pair of doubles victories over tandems from the host Cavaliers at the Snyder Tennis Center on Sunday. UT senior Samantha Orlin also captured her first career win over a ranked player to cap off the singles competition.

Tennessee started the day off strong, taking two out of three doubles matches. The lone setback for the Orange and White was a tight, 9-8, loss by junior Zsófia Zubor and freshman Natalie Pluskota against the Virginia pairing of Lindsey Hardenbergh and Neela Vaez.

From there, the doubles competition was all Lady Vols as the No. 33-ranked pairing of junior Caitlin Whoriskey and sophomore Maria Sorbello defeated the 48th-rated UVa duo of Jennifer Stevens and Amanda Rales, 8-5. The UT sophomore team of Rosalía Alda and Jennifer Meredith then took down the Cavalier combo of Emily Fraser and Claire Bartlett, 9-7, to finish off the doubles portion of the day.

In singles action, Orlin was the lone Lady Vol to pick up a win but did it in stellar fashion, earning her first career victory over a ranked opponent, coming from behind to eliminate the No. 68-ranked Stevens, 2-6, 6-2, 6-2. Unfortunately for fans of the Big Orange, the Cavaliers swept the remaining four contests.

Fraser started Virginia off with a 6-2, 3-6, 6-2, triumph over Alda before Bartlett claimed a 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, decision over Meredith. Hardenbergh and the 106th-rated Rales then took out their opponents in straight sets, defeating Pluskota and Sorbello by scores of 6-1, 6-2, and 6-4, 6-3, respectively.

Tennessee will hit the road once again next weekend to take part in the Furman Fall Classic in Greeneville, S.C., from Sept. 27-30. The Lady Vols will be without Whoriskey and Sorbello in that tournament, however, as the pairing will be on its way to Pacific Palisades, Calif., to compete in the ITA All-American Championships, Sept. 30-Oct. 5. Whoriskey earned a spot in the main qualifying singles draw and will attempt to repeat as doubles champion with a new teammate in Sorbello.
