KNOXVILLE, Tenn.- The University of Tennessee women's tennis team took part in its first tournament of the fall, the Furman Fall Classic at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
"This was our first tournament but some of the other teams have already played once this season and looked a little sharper," said co-head coach Mike Patrick. "It was great for the freshmen to get their first match under their belts. We competed well, but we also have a list of stuff that we can work on when we return to Knoxville."
On day one the Lady Vols saw much success as the doubles partnership of Joanna Henderson and Caitlyn Williams found themselves in the flight one doubles finals after defeating both of their opponents from South Carolina and Alabama in rounds one and two of the doubles tournament Friday morning.
Henderson and Williams took down Jaklin Alawi and Dominika Karakova of South Carolina in the first round by a score of 8-4. Round two saw the duo defeat Mary Anne Macfarlane and Maya Jansen of Alabama 8-6 to advance to the finals, which will take place at 9 a.m. on Saturday morning.
"Caitlyn and Jo did well today in doubles competition beating both of their opponents," said Patrick. "Caitlyn also played two doubles and a singles match and made it all the way through which is a great sign and she competed well in singles."
Also competing in doubles on the day were the No. 34 ranked doubles pair of Brynn Boren and Kata Szekely, who fell in the first round of doubles play to their opponents from UNC. The twosome rebounded with a round two victory over the host team to move on to the fifth place game on Saturday morning.
"Brynn and Kata played against some tough competition today in singles," said Patrick, "and they played in their first doubles match together. They are still feeling each other out and figuring out how to compete together well."
The freshman duo of Tiffany Tavares and Mimi Fotopolous fell twice on day one, in their first action as Lady Vols, by 8-2 and 8-3 scores to opponents from Florida State and Alabama. The pair will play in the flight two seventh place game Saturday morning.
On the singles side of things, three Lady Vols have moved a step closer to their flight final. Williams continued her winning ways by defeating No. 81 Francesca Segarelli of Florida State, 6-4, 6-4.
Fotopoulos picked up her first collegiate win with a victory over Ximena Siles of South Carolina, 6-2, 6-0 and her classmate Tiffany Tavares downed Furman's Katherine Oudin 6-1, 6-1 to move on to the winner's bracket.
No. 18 Brynn Boren dropped a tough 6-2, 3-6, 6-3 battle with FSU's Daneika Borthwick in flight one singles competition while No. 28 Kata Szekely also fell in three sets to Whitney Kay of North Carolina 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 in flight two. Kayla McMurray dropped her flight five opening round match to Romy Koelzer of Clemson 6-0, 6-3.
"We have lots of youth on this team and just two upperclassmen," said Patrick." It shows and you can't teach experience fast. It just takes time to learn which is what we are doing and we have to work hard for January."
The Vols will return to action Saturday in the final round of doubles competition, followed by the second round of singles action.
