GREENVILLE, S.C. - On the second day of the Furman Fall Classic, the University of Tennessee women's tennis team had three players win a pair of singles matches, including senior Samantha Orlin and junior Zsófia Zubor who reached the finals of flights five and six, respectively. Freshman Natalie Pluskota also went undefeated in seventh flight action Saturday at the Mickel Tennis Center in Greenville, S.C.
Orlin scored the most impressive win of the day for the Lady Vols, defeating her second straight ranked opponent, No. 36 Lauren Lui of Northwestern, 7-6 (5), 6-3. She followed up that impressive performance with a 6-1, 6-2, triumph over Furman's Susan Bitetti to advance to the finals of the fifth flight.
Zubor also had a successful day, starting with a dominating 6-1, 6-0, victory over Hannah Blatt from Southeastern Conference rival Vanderbilt. In her semifinal contest, the native Hungarian remained perfect with a straight set win over Furman's Jennifer Betts, 6-2, 6-3. Orlin and Zubor will square off with Vanderbilt's Chelsea Preeg and Bonny Davidson of Florida State in their respective flight finals at 10:30 a.m. on Sunday.
In the seventh flight, Pluskota tallied victories over a pair of players from North Carolina, downing Hanes Harris and Linzee Mabry, 6-0, 6-2, and 6-1, 6-0, respectively. Sophomore Jennifer Meredith picked up the Lady Vols' only other win on the day, blanking Lauren Tomory of Furman, 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth flight, before suffering a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1, defeat at the hands of Clemson's Alexandra Luc.
Unfortunately for fans of the Orange and White, UT's top three players all had rough days, dropping a pair of matches each. In the top flight, sophomore Rosalía Alda took on two ranked players, falling 6-2, 6-4, to No. 2-ranked Ani Mijacika of Clemson before being taken out, 6-4, 7-6 (5), by No. 24 Katie Rybakova of Florida State.
Tennessee's lone ranked player, No. 37 Caitlin Whoriskey, was also defeated twice in second flight play, dropping a hard-fought, 7-5, 3-6, 6-4, decision to Furman's Monica Arguello and suffering a 6-3, 6-4, loss to Keilly Ulery of Vanderbilt. In the third flight, sophomore Maria Sorbello was defeated by Ania Rynarzewska of Florida State and Shinann Featherston of North Carolina, 6-1, 6-4, and 6-4, 6-4, respectively.
Although the majority of the Lady Vol squad will have nearly a month off from competitive play following this weekend's action, Whoriskey and Sorbello will hit the road immediately, as the duo will be on its way to Pacific Palisades, Calif., to compete in the ITA All-American Championships, Sept. 30-Oct. 5. Whoriskey earned a spot in the main qualifying singles draw and will attempt to repeat as doubles champion with a new teammate in Sorbello after claiming the title with Zubor last year.
